For the 4th year in a row, SMART has chosen to support the innovative research of Dr. Charlotte Sumner in the Department of Neurology at Johns-Hopkins University. Dr. Sumner is a physician/scientist and a world leader in efforts to understand the underlying causes and manifestations of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
The promising results generated by Dr. Sumner and her collaborators, including her postdoctoral fellow Dr. Constantin van Outryve d’Ydewalle, have started to open up a potential new research path with therapeutic promise in the treatment of SMA. Consequently, for 2013-2014, we’ve taken the unprecedented approach of funding 2 research areas in their laboratory with the largest combined grant to date – $115,000!
We wish Drs. Sumner and van Outryve d’Ydewalle the best of luck in their efforts. All of us at SMART should be proud of the difference we are making in moving closer to finding potential treatments and hopefully one day a cure for SMA.
